Meet Max Quillan

Delve into the world of Max Quillan, a 'discontented historian' and the captivating protagonist of the Jackson Lamont mystery series.

The Reluctant Detective

Max Quillan's journey begins as an English-born historian, educated in Scotland, with a penchant for medieval history, particularly the Cathars. A failed marriage and disillusionment with academia lead him down unexpected paths. After uncovering the hiding place of the stolen Turin Shroud in Paris, he helps recover the Scottish Crown jewels and unmasks an evil figure targeting famous crime writers. His sharp intellect and knack for stumbling upon clues make him a successful, albeit reluctant, detective.

The accidental detective

Max went to school in Edinburgh and when he returns to the city for a temporary teaching post he becomes involved in the search for the Scottish Crown  Jewels when they are stolen from Edinburgh Castle (pictured right).  His relationship with Rosamunde Michelle KC helps him to find the jewels but when they embark on another adventure (see To kill a crime writer) disaster strikes. Each book in the series reveals new facets of Max's personality and past.

Stolen Images and Beyond

In the new book, Stolen Images, Max is working at the V&A museum in Dundee, (pictured left) when he encounters cutting-edge AI technology apparently owned by dangerous criminals. His passion for classic cars and a rekindled romance form the background to a  thrilling mystery. As the series progresses, Max's journey of self-discovery continues.

"Stolen Images is a great read and I became increasingly drawn in as we went. I felt certain I knew roughly where it might be leading but got it all wrong. And that in itself i found delightful. As the plot twisted and turned I just had to keep reading to see what would unfold."
